After qualifying and working initially as a Therapy Radiographer, I became a Clinical Tutor then moved to join the Cancer Services Collaborative (CSC). My first role was as a Project Manager at the Northern Cancer Centre, introducing Service Improvement methodology / Cancer Waiting Times standards across 5 hospital sites for Colorectal cancer. I then became a Regional Facilitator (covering 4 cancer networks in the North East) and concluded my time with the CSC as National Lead for Radiotherapy Service Improvement. This was supporting Professor Sir Mike Richards at the time of the New Opportunities Fund (Linear Accelerator replacement programme) and National Radiotherapy Dataset/ Episode Statistics development and included working with Dr Kate Silvester to develop a uniform approach to capacity and demand in radiotherapy/ complex multi-step services.
I then moved to LTHT to address problems with waiting times in radiotherapy and support the development and build of the new Oncology services at the St James University Hospital site, moving to Cancer Manager, then Associate Director of Performance and now Associate Director of Operations with a remit covering 4 of our largest Cancer and Diagnostic Clinical Service Units with budgets of around £300 million per annum.
